Like all working mothers, I do my best at juggling work, home, kids, the dog, and all the responsibilities that go along with a full life in general. Some days I think I manage the juggle quite well (up early, dog walked, lunches made, beds made, kids skipping happily off to school, a fresh cup of coffee and a nice, quiet house to get all the work of the day done). Everyone knows how ubiquitous smart phones have become. You can’t walk down any street without seeing the majority of the people – young and old – talking, texting, or in some way connecting with their mobile device. The proliferation of phones and the demand for immediate accessibility will continue to grow, as will demand for connectivity in our daily lives. And given the personal nature of mobile devices, the design and functionality of apps must meet the ever changing and more demanding nature of user expectations even when the users themselves don’t yet know what they are demanding. We’re all bombarded with news stories from many sources. Some news items are pushed via e-mail, others are aggregated in a news reader or RSS feed, while other items are on web sites that we visit regularly. With so many news outlets competing for our attention, it’s no surprise that each one wants to be first with the latest story. I must confess that I am a voracious reader. I regularly read e-mails and e-newsletters on my BlackBerry, as do many other smart phone users. I recently started reading books on the device – something I never expected to do – and I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. While waiting for a delayed flight, I discovered that I didn’t have any traditional reading material with me and I didn’t want to buy any.
