Over the past decade, the idea of the Semantic Web and these curious things called ontologies have begun seeping into the broader zeitgeist. While ontologies are vital parts of the Semantic Web vision, the two are separate – if inter-related – ideas. In this post, I’ll revisit one of the fundamental problems that motivated development and subsequent commercialization of ontologies – namely the problems that arise out of interpersonal and human-system communication.
