A survey of more than 600 lenders in the mortgage market which was undertaken in April 2010 by Wolters Kluwer Financial Services found 76 percent were still relying on an inefficient paper-based method to process mortgages. The content industry has seen much innovation over its long history. Innovation today in the content industry seems centered around (1) mobile capabilities; (2) advances in relevance ranking for search; and (3) the transformation of content into software and workflow tools; and (4) cloud computing. We speak about innovation in general and give specific examples of innovation. But what, specifically, is innovation, and how does it occur? I’m convinced that players in the content industry that relentlessly focus on making their customers more productive (particularly when it involves supplementing or replacing content with software) inherently innovate even though they do not have a formal definition of innovation.
